शुरू हुई आराध्य भूमि यह क्लांत नहीं रे राही;
एक खेप है शेष, किसी विध पार उसे कर जाओ;
वह देखो, उस पार चमकता है मन्दिर प्रियतम का।
आकर इतना पास फिरे, वह सच्चा शूर नहीं है;

Khushaal Yadav, Rank – 28, CSE-14

Demystifying the Personality Test
Khushaal Yadav, Rank – 28, CSE-14
The UPSC has finally disclosed the interview and mains marks. More than 775 in mains and over around 175 in PT (Personality Test/Interview) is must for harboring any hopes of getting in the administrative services. Of course, there could be outliers who will defy any sort of analysis.
Mains is straight forward Read and Revise and Presentation (More on MAINS later)
Back in the graduation days we used to have theoretical exams and practicals including viva-voce. It was then that I realised the importance of the ‘Interview Skills’. It goes without saying that one needs to have a respectable knowledge of the content before presenting ones viewpoints, but there are certain skills and a particular attitude that can go a log way into making the PT one of your strong areas.
I did not do great in the content aspect, meaning my answers were not extraordinary but being well prepared mentally and being presentable helped me score 201 and make the cut. It compensated for a below par 782in the Mains that I managed.
State of Mind-
This is perhaps the most important part. Make or break. It would determine your rank, your service , cadre,  everything related to the UPSC CSE
It is the most essential aspect in that you are being tested for your communication, presentation, thinking, reasoning skills which are sine qua non for a prospective Officer.
Get into that frame
Imagine you are already in the job. Say, you are in a meeting with hot-shots , or addressing a Press Conference. How would you act then? This is in brief what your PT is all about. To express yourself directly, soundly, and convincingly.
The Skills take time
One does not become an orator overnight. It requires great deal of patience, practice and proper guidance. It is true for any other field. Getting into a proper shape- physical or mental is time consuming, but its a frame of mind worth getting into.

Simple Exercises
1)IMAGINE yourself to be into the fabled corridors of the UPSC and being escorted to the interview board. Anticipate it. The walk, the churning of the gut, that rush, that chill down the spine.
2) Mirror, mirror! Tell it all!!
Practice speaking before a mirror. Write down  questions on a chit and draw them randomly.Think for some time, formulate your thoughts, get the necessary phrases, anticipate the possible counter questions that might follow and respond in a calm, controlled and confident manner.
3) Summarise– after reading say an article of the HIndu or the IE, close your eyes and try to summarize it in say a 100 words, recapitulate the key words. This helps not only in memorisation but also helps to avoid verbosity and brings about brevity in the responses, a desirable trait in an officer.
4) V-LOGS – Alternatively, you could record yourself and analyse the clip later, with or without friends. This helps to identify Gestures( facial/bodily), Slips of tongues, stock-phrases, Beating around the bush, tone, pitch, pace, etcetera.
An indispensable exercise to master the movements of the tongue and make them fluid, seamless and purposeful.
5) Learn from the best Turn to presenters from the BBC, Al- jazeera, CNN; world leaders- Barack Obama, PM Modi ji, Putin, Cameroon; Speakers who have honed the craft of story telling. This is in short what it is. Telling them a tale and keeping them spell-bounded. Additionally, this helps you to stay abreast with the changes in the world, to say the least.

India’s first visually challenged diplomat

IFS gets “hidden treasure” in Beno Zephine; 10 things to know about India’s first visually challenged diplomat

Beno Zephine being felicitated in DoPT
DURING the last few days senior ministers in the corridors felicitated a 25-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu. She is Beno Zephine. Literally, Beno means daughter of God and Zephine means hidden treasure. Yes, Indian Foreign Service gets a “hidden treasure” when Beno Zephine became the first 100 per cent visually challenged person to be inducted into the country's elite foreign service. Here are 10 things you may like to know about Beno Zephine.

1. Daughter of Indian railway employee Luke Anthony Charles and Mary Padmaja, a homemaker, Beno secured the 343rd rank in the 2013-14 civil service examination.
2. But, she had to wait as the government had to change the rules to accommodate her in IFS. After all, the existing government rules did not allow anyone with 100% blindness to be an IFS.
3. Beno’s first choice in UPSC was the Indian Foreign Service. So, when she got a call on June 12, 2015, from an under secretary-ranked official in the ministry of external affairs informing her that she was selected, she was overjoyed.
4. She is a post-graduation in English literature from Loyola College, Chennai.
5. After she completed her MA in 2013, she was selected as a probationary officer with the State Bank of India (SBI).
6. "With my first salary, I bought a gold chain for my father and earrings for my mother”, she said in an interview with rediff.com recently.
7. Her mother read out many books for her. Also, she regularly listened to the 9 o'clock news of All India Radio from her childhood, something which helped her cracking the UPSC examinations.
8. After her joining in SBI and passing the civil service examination, he gave motivational speeches in schools and colleges across the state of Tamil Nadu. She loves tell the students: “Understand your strengths and weaknesses, only then will you be able to strengthen your strength and weaken your weakness.”
9. Beno’s enthusiasm and zeal to work had earned her the title of "Collector" among the residents of the colony in Chennai from where she hailed, according to a Government of India statement about her felicitation.
10. When personnel minister and MoS in the PMO Jitendra Singh felicitated her recently, additional secretary and EO Rajiv Kumar, additional secretary T Jacob and other senior officials of DoPT made it a point to join the felicitation programme and encouraged h

Politicians may come and go, bureaucrats remain

Politicians may come and go, bureaucrats remain. As the poet says:
“Though kings and tyrants come and go
A soldier's life is all I know
I'll live to fight another day
Over the hills and far away.”
AS Ajit K Seth ended his extended 4-year-term term as India’s cabinet secretary on Saturday, prime minister Narendra Modi posted three tweets to praise one of Seth's initiatives in cabinet secretariat called “Art in Steps” before wishing him for the “new phase in his life”. For the low-profile bureaucrat who studied chemistry in St Stephen’s college in early 1970s and served two prime ministers -- Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi -- as their cabinet secretary, it was mainly the art of good chemistry that worked in his favour. First, let’s read what Modi had to say for Seth on Saturday…
“After a distinguished career spanning 4 decades, Cabinet Secretary Shri Ajit Seth retired today. Best wishes for the new phase in his life”, was Modi’s first tweet. Then, the PM went on to praise Seth’s “creative effort”. “Ajit Seth ji shared with me about ‘Art in Steps’, a unique initiative at Cabinet Secretariat to promote art and spread message of cleanliness…Staircases were cleaned and along their walls paintings by officials and their spouses were placed. A creative effort!” PM said.
As Seth himself described, “Art in Steps” is an initiative to display paintings, photographs, and sculptures made by civil servants and their spouses. Those are being kept in the cabinet secretariat premises. “The walls of the corridors and staircases provide a good setting and the eye-catching exhibits are impossible to miss”, wrote Seth, as displayed in the corridors. In fact, the initiative which is also called “Stairing at Art”, began in the month of February 2015. The exhibits are replaced periodically and after being displayed for a couple of weeks, those are returned to the civil servants or their spouses.
When Modi came to power in May last year, many thought the axe would fall on bureaucrats who called the shots during the UPA regime. But to surprise many, Modi gave Seth a 6-month-long extension only to be renewed again for another six months. “It’s Seth, not (principal secretary to PM) Nripendra Misra, who knows the strength and weaknesses of each of the current union secretary. And prime minister Modi may ask for Seth’s frank assessment of each of the secretary before undertaking a bureaucratic reshuffle at the Centre,” BoI wrote in a post dated June 3, 2014 when Seth was given an extension. But as it turned out, Seth’s chemistry with Modi turned better every passing month. Seth made his presence felt in the corridors’ major activities despite the two Mishras (principal secretary to PM Nripendra Misra and additional principal secretary to PM PK Misra) advised the PM in all policy and appointment matters.
When Seth’s appointment as India’s cabinet secretary was announced in May 2011, BoI wrote: “When all powerful man in PMO Pulok Chatterji dictated terms in Raisina Hills during UPA-I, his batch-mate from the same UP cadre Ajit Kumar Seth was the resident commissioner in New Delhi’s Uttar Pradesh Bhawan. Seth had a higher rank in 1974 batch IAS merit list, but no one even bothered to bet on Seth that this man from UP might one day snap the country’s top bureaucratic job. For six long years, Seth -- known for his honesty and meticulous work -- remained a mere resident commissioner in UP Bhawan. Finally, he got the break when he was appointed as secretary, coordination and public grievances in cabinet secretariat in January, 2009. And the rest is history now…”.
But Seth proved everyone wrong. He managed both the regimes, of Manmohan and Modi, pretty well. When he was an OSD in the run-up to his elevation as cabinet secretary, Seth handled the Baba Ramdev crisis for the UPA government. It was June 2011. Seth was seen in Delhi airport’s Terminal-I along with the then cabinet secretary KM Chandrasekhar. The then UPA government took an unprecedented move to send four cabinet ministers, the then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, telecom minister Kapil Sibal, parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahay, to the Delhi airport to persuade the Yoga Guru Ramdev not to go for his proposed fast. But the move backfired. And Seth got his on-the-job experience just a few days before he took charge as the country’s top bureaucrat.
And as he exits now, the same Ramdev is a very influential person in the corridors. No wonder, Seth spent the last few days of his office in preparing for the coming International Yoga Day, the rehearsal of which is being conducted by none other than the Yoga Guru himself.

Sons who won't leave home

A friend came visiting the other day, his normally optimistic demeanour not as sunny, his normally upright stance a little stooped. I was starting to wonder what could have gone wrong with this high achiever. He is in his mid-50s, at the top of his profession, completely self-made, happily married, his son is a graduate of a top American university and he lives in an apartment with a grand view of the Mumbai harbour. Judging by all these symbols of modern Indian life, he had "made it". SO why the drooping shoulders, why the clouded face?

"It's my son," he said, staring gloomily into his drink.

"Has anything gone wrong with your son?" I asked, alarmed.

After a long minute of further staring into his glass, he said, "He just won't leave home."

"He is in his late 20s; at that stage, I had moved out of my parents' home and set up on my own, I had made headway in my profession, found myself a wife. My son seem to have no interest in making a mark in any profession - he has no interest in seriously working with me, he has half-heartedly tried but not achieved the formal professional qualifications needed to be a full-time player in my profession. He is not interested in getting married. He continues living at home with us, he does not seem to have any interest in moving out to a place of his own. At his age, I moved out of my parents' home into a paying-guest accommodation and continued to live as a paying guest even after I got married till I could afford a place of my own. But my son does not seem to feel any such pressure."

Then it struck me. I have heard this conversation in the past two years with many other friends, all hard-driving self-achievers in a wide range of professions: some were doctors, others lawyers, others editors of well-known magazines, still others chief executives of public companies. What was in common was that they were all at the top of their professions, all came from modest family backgrounds, they had all risen to the top of their professions by creativity, imagination, drive - and relentless hard work spread over two decades or more. They had paid handsome amounts to make sure that their children had gone to Ivy League American universities for their undergraduate degrees. Now, they all had sons or daughters in their late 20s or early 30s living at home.

As I reflected about this new phenomenon, I realised that friends with such worries were not just in Mumbai or Delhi. One is the finance director and board member of a French government conglomerate; there are more than a few such successful friends in New York; and one even in Tokyo, a board member of a worldwide Japanese media company.

There is a Wiki devoted to helping with this problem: "How to get your adult children to move out". It poses questions such as, "Is your child taking advantage of the mixed feelings you may have about encouraging your child to move out?" On the one hand, you might enjoy their company at home, or you don't want them to struggle on their own; but, on the other, you worry that this is preventing them from being self-sufficient. This Wiki reports that when people ask their children whether they want to move out, they may get this familiar answer that they want to but. These buts could extend to "I am looking for the right job that can really use my talents" (check whether he is really making an effort at job hunting, advises the Wiki), or "I can't afford a place" (is it that your child can't afford a place, or that they can't afford a place as comfortable as your place?).

Haim Omer, a psychologist, says this phenomenon merits being called a "syndrome" and even found a name for it: "entitled dependence". He says that the phenomenon is so widespread that new terms have developed to describe it: "bamboccioni" (big babies) in Italy; "hotel mama" to describe the parental home, in Germany; "boomerang children" in Australia; "parasaito shinguru" (single parasite) in Japan. He says that these young men and women don't leave home and don't get married because "they only want to buy brand names and enjoy themselves and to live, as an ideology, at their parents' expense". He says that this is nothing less than a pandemic. His book, The New Authority: Family, School, and Community, presents a new model of authority in dealing with children for parents, teachers and the community.

There are other versions of this "entitled dependence". One version is when your child, approaching completion of high school, tells you that everyone else in her class is getting admitted to colleges like New York University, Stanford or Harvard. You end up spending Rs 50-60 lakh a year for the next four years to put your child through these expensive institutions. That's also when you realise that admissions to these famous undergraduate programmes are available to whoever is willing to pay the full fees. Another version of this is when a parent borrows Rs 35 lakh plus at 14 per cent interest to put his child through a masters in a British or Australian university. The endgame is that the child returns at the end of the expensive education and stays at home.

Then there is the case of a driven lawyer from a very modest background who made a name and immense wealth for himself handling the hottest cases of the day. When asked what the secret of his success was, his answer, as befitting all self-achiever types is, "It is simple enough, I want money. I work for it and get it. There are many people who want it perhaps more than I do, but they do not work and naturally enough do not get it." When his son returned after an expensive education abroad, with an indifferent educational record after spending seven years there, he pushed him to join his legal practice. The son did this for eight years without any distinction, living with his parents, enjoying the lavish parties they threw, but found the legal profession "pointless and futile". The idling son, who could not find anything interesting in his father's profession, found something completely different to catch his fancy: the independence movement. This "son who wouldn't leave home", turned out to be the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru

Happy Republic day to all my well wishers !!! SAMVEG IAS

we still have to achive objective of Preamble but we have travel grand journey in many aspect in last 65 years.we should celebrate the republic day with smile and should try to create smile on others face.

How to never give up?!

Why is it that we fail in life?
Is it because we are not smart enough? Is it because we don’t know the technicalities of something? Is it because our people skills are bad? Is it because we didn’t do well in school to get good grades? I am sure I can come up with a lot of similar sounding questions and the answers would be equally varied. But I have never come across an answer more convincing than “I gave up”. I guess that perhaps is the single most important and sensible reason for failure in life. It reminds me of a dialogue from the movie Tin Tin -
“There is something you need to know about failure Tin Tin, you can never let it defeat you”
Without much ado, let us try and see what the above brochure is trying to tell us
1) Stay Alive
stay alive, dont give up, keep persisting even if you fail
shutterstock.com
Yes of course! This is the most important thing. There will be a lot of situations which push you down, which make you feel sad, which make you worry and also make you think that life is over. But find a way to stay alive. There will be light in the darkest corner of the sky. Just ensure that you are there to see it. It is very easy to give up and put your hands on your head and say it is all over. You can do that any day. It takes guts to stay alive, it takes guts to believe, it takes guts to stick to your guns when everything around you is falling apart. Success doesn’t lie in never falling, it lies in getting up as soon as possible and STAYING ALIVE
2) Lower your expectations
It is very optimistic of us to say that we are going to invent a product and the next day there would be a queue of people who would want to buy it no matter what price we quote. I am not here to shatter that dream of yours but I am going to tell you that inventing is just a part of the business. There is marketing, there is sales, there is brand building, there is negotiation, there is compromises and so much more. Though I would like to shoot to the stars, I would also like to know that it is sometimes unreasonable that a star comes in search of you. It takes time, it takes effort but it does come. Over 99.9% of the success has taken time, it has not happened overnight. So.. respect the time and cling on to your belief, it is bound to come with the right approach
3) Don’t be a wimp!
afraid, scared, dont be scared of failures in life
toonvectors.com
You are way stronger than you tell yourself and others know you as and infact stronger than you yourself know you as. You are more capable to handle the pain than you think. It is very natural and easy to drown in the glory of self pity and keep feeling sorry for yourself. If you keep feeling sorry about the way things are, you will keep feeling sorry for the rest of your life. So.. Buck up, it is going to be a tough wind out there, brace it. You were not born or raised to be a quitter!
4) Persist!
We don’t mean to say that you should be stuck in the same loop forever. If plan A doesn’t work, go for plan B and then plan C. You have 26 letters there and if that doesn’t suffice you have A1 to An and then keep going on.. Point is, it depends on how much you believe in the dream, how much you believe in whatever you have put in for it. Nowhere on the birth certificate was it said that you would succeed at everything you put your hands on in life. You are going to miss out on a few things and the reasons might be as simple as a wrong timing or a big trust issue. But you gotta persist, the moment you give up or think of giving up, the dream dies and so does all the effort to get there.
5) Fake it!
If you are falling short of motivation, FAKE IT! Think of how it will be to succeed. Think of all the dreams you would be realizing, think of how people around you would respond to it. You don’t have to wait for that one final day when success will sweep you off your feet, you can celebrate each day, be motivated by every event and that drives you forward and keeps driving you forward.
6) Don’t compare!
weighing scale, dont compare, dont compare with peers or friends
clker.com
Your life will always be different compared to your peers. The efforts they have put in and the efforts you have put in are different. There is something very special told about an entrepreneur – success comes to you like an exponential scale, all the effort that you have put in, all the sacrifices you have made will pay you back. You just have to wait till the tipping point where the scale changes. It will never be similar to what your friends or peers have but it will be that much better. So don’t worry about comparing, you are fighting with a bigger target here.
7) The night is the darkest before dawn.
We have heard of a hundred inspirational stories where people have flipped their lives in that one decisive moment the moment where they decided to persist, it may be SONY or KFC or APPLE or MICROSOFT, they have all had those bad days, the days which have made them think whether they should wind up. But what made them stay was that they decided to test the waters a little more and that little more made a hell lot of a difference !
So…
Still thinking of giving up?

The race against time

Producing quality work within a stipulated time calls for motivation, swiftness and a practical approach.

The night before the submission date, you find yourself struggling hard to keep awake through the night, trying to put your assignment in shape, hoping frenziedly for an extension and cursing yourself for landing in this mess. Does this sound familiar? If yes, then perhaps, it is time you took stock of your time management skills.
All your keenness and efforts to turn out good work would come to naught if you fail to meet the deadline. The result: loss of marks and a sense of inadequacy. While in college, one gets away with a reprimand or a few marks less; in work situations, much more is at stake.
Get over inertia
Procrastination, the most common deterrent to time management, should be feared like the plague. Once this enters the psyche of an individual, it is difficult to shed it. Starting early is indispensable to the successful completion of one’s work within a given timeframe. Almost always, things go wrong at the last minute, and your ability to manage the glitches gets diminished by a flustered state of mind. You are left with no contingency time to set things right. Pressure mounts up at the end, and there is both physical and mental stress. The sense of guilt over not having utilised your time adds to the misery.
“Building motivation is the way to counter procrastination. It is important to value what you do and be passionate about it in order to work hard at it and avoid delays,” says Mitesh Khatri, leadership trainer and author. So, how does one deal with mental blocks that don’t allow one to get to the heart of the task? “The numero uno principle of time management is to be in the right state of mind. Sweating over a task even when one is not quite feeling up to it leads to more wastage of time. The best way to deal with this is to take a break and engage in some positive energising activities such as listening to motivational songs in order to regain the flow,” explains Khatri.
Practical approach
It is important to estimate exactly how much time it would take to complete a piece of work. “Often students fail to take into account the demands of the task ahead and tend to put things off for another time. Understanding the length of the project and then planning accordingly is necessary. Create a timetable for academic activities and then diligently stick to it,” says Mithun Pillai, Assistant Professor and course co-ordinator, Department of Mass Media, SIES (Nerul) College of Arts, Science and Commerce. Bringing about regularity in one’s work pattern is essential. Sporadic bursts of productivity may not help as much as consistent use of time.
The completion of any assignment or project, especially one that requires some creativity or analytical thinking on the part of the student, happens in stages. Starting with the ideation stage, it goes through a process of information gathering to analysing and ends with bringing the project to a presentable form. Getting stuck at one stage can be disastrous. A student, for instance, may keep waiting for the perfect brainwave and lose out on precious time. Also, digressions can delay the process further. Determining the focus of the task and not wading in unknown waters for too long helps save a lot of time.
Finally, wrap up when it’s time to do so. Even when there is a feeling that the work can be improved, clinging to it can make you miss your deadline. Most experts agree that when it comes to perfection versus punctuality, the latter wins hands down. Punctuality brings reliability and is valued most in any organisation. Like the winner of a marathon, it’s important to gather pace in the final laps. “For finishing well, bring about agility in your methods. Besides, it does good to remember that growth should be the ultimate aim and not perfection,” says Khatri.
College projects and assignments can be seen as opportunities not only for skill development in a particular area but also as grounds for conditioning oneself to racing against time while not compromising on quality. This could help one ready oneself for the demands of the industry.
