motivation

Whatever you think, that you will become; so take care about what you think. If you have to think, think good thoughts, great thoughts. Words are secondary.  Thoughts live; they travel far." - Swami Vivekananda

Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea.

Throughout our life, we have met people who seem to have more intelligence than the rest of us. We term these people brilliant, smart or address them as genius. We may assume that their intelligence is God’s gift to them. Perhaps you are one of these gifted souls yourself.  Then there are others who find it hard to concentrate and perform well academically, struggle with assigned jobs, to learn new things, and perhaps wish that they were more like those geniuses.

A competitive society places a lot of importance on intelligence. Intelligent people are considered valuable everywhere. People who display lower levels of intelligence fear the consequences of not being able to keep up with the peers in their respective fields. When our children perform well academically, we proudly rejoice and share their performance with everyone around us. On the other hand, when the child is struggling academically, it causes much anxiety and worry to parents.

Do you struggle academically and in your career? Do you  consider yourself dull and wished that your were smarter? Or do you just wish to do better at the tasks that you take up? The good news is that you are already a genius, just that you may or may not know it. Even top performers use only a small percentage of their brains, and it follows that each one of us has a potential within us to be a genius. It is a myth that geniuses are born that way. In reality, geniuses are the ones who have developed their inner capabilities more than others.

If you believe that your intelligence is static and cannot be enhanced,  consider this. The performance of  students who are otherwise brilliant suffer greatly after experiencing some traumatic event in their lives. The same students are not able to learn and retain like they used to. Sometimes, the drop in academic performance is so drastic, that a top student might get failing grades in school after experiencing the trauma, until the situation is correct by therapy. The same is true with adults as well. This suggests that clearly there is something more to performance besides raw intelligence and genetics.

Why is it that some people perform higher than others?

The following observation from geography helps to understand this better. In the Indian subcontinent, many rivers originate in the Himalayas. Most of these rivers break up into smaller distributaries, until they get either land locked or dried up by the sun. The rivers that break up into smaller streams and distributaries never reach the ocean.  On the other hand, the river Ganges, which also starts in the Himalayas, continues to flow steadfastly south east  without breaking up, and is able to pour its waters into the Bay of Bengal. The fact that the Ganges flows without dividing herself is the dominant reason for her to be able to reach the ocean.

The path of the river ganges.

Such is the case with the intelligence of the human mind. People who are able to focus their thoughts on a particular subject with undivided attention appear to be more intelligent than others. In reality the same potential exists in the rest of us as well.  Genius is less about the faculty of intelligence itself, and more about the ability to concentrate on a specific task without getting distracted.

Swami Vivekananda

As swami Vivekananda said:

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, that is way great spiritual giants are produced.”

Now the question is, why is it that some people are able to give undivided attention to what they take up, whereas some others are not able to?

There are two reasons for this:

  1. A high goal that greatly inspires and motivates the individual
  2. A mind that is free from distraction

Let us take this up this up one by one:

1) A high goal that greatly inspires and motivates the individual

Until and unless an individual selects a task that greatly inspires and motivates him, his full potential does not get unleashed. This is why it is extremely important to “follow your heart”. Selecting a field of work only because of the need to survive ensures that an individual forever remains only in survival mode. All of the potential of such a  person remain dormant.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was a mediocre student in school. He was a shy, soft-spoken individual who had no great spark of intelligence or leadership in him. All that changed when he suffered discrimination in Africa due to the color of his skin. He took upon himself the goal to correct the injustices that he faced. Highly inspired and motivated with this goal, this once shy man of mediocre abilities underwent a tremendous transformation. He grew by leaps and bounds, fought diligently and untiringly towards the goal of freedom for the entire nation, and in the process introduced some of the most brilliant and powerful ideas known to fight injustice in a peaceful manner. His leadership was par excellence. No one remembers the shy mediocre student,  all of us know him as a highly powerful and revered political leader who we lovingly call “Bapu” – The father of the nation. All of us can bring out the great potential sleeping within us, if only we find a high goal that deeply inspires us, like Mahatma Gandhi did.

2) A mind that is free from distraction

As seen above in the example of the intellectual performance of people suffering after undergoing mental trauma, even people who are otherwise considered brilliant, perform poorly when the mind is distracted. Only when the mind is quietened does the intellect starts to perform to its full potential. An individual with a quiet mind is better able to make decisions that are in true alignment with his purpose, and thus increases his chances of success. Also a quiet mind conserves a lot of energy, as it is at peace. A quiet mind is more creative and intuitive. An agitated mind is more prone to negative emotions  such as anger, hatred, doubt, insecurity, unworthiness, etc, which wastes precious energy that would be otherwise channeled towards the task at hand.

The other source of distraction come via our senses. It is not uncommon for a person’s intellectual performance to suffer when the mind is distracted thanks to  preoccupation with gratifying one of more of the senses – which is what happens when the mind deeply craves for anything. This is why people who experiencing a breakup of their relationship, or are addicted to alcohol or drugs perform well below their potential. Regular meditation reduces our cravings and aversions. It helps to cultivate a mind that is creative, intuitive, and free of distraction, which unleashes more of the power of your intellect to the tasks you undertake.

Your intelligence is not a fixed entity. You have enormous potential within you to enhance it.  Each one of us carries within us the seed of genius. Most of us preserve the seed as it, whereas some of us take that seed and grow it into a mighty tree  – and that makes all the difference in the world.  You are a genius. Once you know this and believe it completely, it is a only matter of time that the rest of the world will acknowledge it too.

An exit that shows the way

A new generation of Indian entrepreneurs is looking to leaders like Murthy, Nilekani and Gopalakrishnan on how to do it right.
When Infosys executive chairman Narayana Murthy declared in June this year that he was relinquishing his job and hanging up his Infosys boots and that the last of the founders would exit executive roles, this newspaper launched a frantic hunt for a photo. A vintage snapshot of all the founders at the iconic firm’s naissance 33 years ago would have been most appropriate for the feature in the Sunday pages.

For Murthy and his cohort, there could have been no more opportune a moment to make a graceful exit.
Many grainy images of the founders in the early days were available. One had a couple of founders and wives at what looked like a birthday cake-cutting. Another showed a few founders in geeky glasses squatting on a flight of steps. Yet another sepia-toned photo showed two founders and their wives at a picnic. However, not a single photo was available of the founders together in 1981, the year Infosys was founded, or even just after.
So it was more than ironic that earlier this month, six formally dressed men offered a variety of “photo ops” on what was their farewell as the founders of Infosys. The final day line-up was complete. There was Murthy himself, alongside N.S. Raghavan, Nandan Nilekani, K. Dinesh, Kris Gopalakrishnan and S.D. Shibulal. The only missing face was of Ashok Arora, who quit the startup team early on. It was an emotional moment for the firm and its founders, though they laughed and joked their way through the day.
Soon, the founders will turn into ordinary shareholders of Infosys, a move that is beneficial not just to the firm but to themselves as well. In turning into regular shareholders, the founders’ (and their families’) total shareholding of almost 16 per cent in the company will be considered to be free-floating shares and enhance its appeal to investors. Their new status as public shareholders will give them the freedom to sell their shares when they choose, without board sanction.
For Murthy and his cohort, there could have been no more opportune a moment to make a graceful exit. A new CEO is in place and seems to have gotten off to a good start by presenting better than expected profits in his first quarter of taking over — a 28.6 per cent rise in net profit for the quarter ended September 30 and a 2.9 per cent growth in revenues. Making a clean break at this juncture will give the firm’s new professional leadership a chance to shape and steer the company’s future from here on.
At the farewell meeting, Murthy talked about his decision not to keep the ceremonial title of “chairman emeritus” at Infosys in order to avoid any perceived conflict. Murthy was the epitome of Infosys values when he said he wants to be a “Regular Joe” instead. There is nothing average or regular, however, about Murthy and his cohort, who built not just the Infosys brand but, in parallel, also helped grow India’s brand as a globalising, forward-looking country with an enormous talent pool. Infosys’s listing on Nasdaq in 1999, the first Indian company to list on an American stock exchange, was a landmark event. Since then, the Rs 28 crore firm has grown to Rs 2,00,000 crore in market capitalisation. Infosys has had its share of challenges. It was not until the company ran out of founders to fill the chief executive position that an outsider was finally brought in earlier this year, much to the disappointment of its investors, who watched its performance slide during the last few years. Again, last year, it faced censure when Murthy jumped out of retirement and was back in the thick of things — trying to resurrect the flailing firm with his son Rohan as his executive assistant. Despite these transgressions, though, no company has influenced India’s corporate landscape as much as Infosys, with its clean governance principles and adherence to high ethical standards. In their graceful and absolute exit, too, Infosys’s founders showed the way to corporate India, where even the biggest firms are fond of parachuting sons, daughters and assorted relatives into executive and board positions. The founders will no longer associate with the company or exercise any control over its affairs. It will be a clean break. They may have departed from Infosys but in their wake, a new generation of Indian entrepreneurs is looking to leaders like Murthy, Nilekani and Gopalakrishnan on how to do it right in India. Many Average Joe Indians will watch them to see how they employ their enormous personal wealth to doing work with a social conscience. In other words, the founders may have left Infosys, but they can never really stray from the public eye. -

UKPCS-ONLINE TEST SERIES BY SAMVEG IAS DEHRADUN

Device-led distraction

Do not let your mobile phones, tablets or laptops take control of your life.

In the past few weeks, I’ve come across more than one article discussing the presence of mobile devices in the classroom. Some teachers have very clear rules about switching off mobile phones in the classroom, and some do not allow devices of any kind to be used when a lecture is in progress. But there are also quite a few teachers who have a more open attitude to device use in class, as long as it is not disruptive to the group as a whole.
The disturbance

Clay Shirky, who teaches the theory and practice of social media at New York University, talks about how he recently decided to impose a complete ban on laptops and other devices in his classroom. He found that the level of distraction from the use of laptops, tablets and mobile phones was becoming difficult to control. He notes that the quality of engagement and conversation in the class become much higher once the phones and tablets were put away. It was, in his words, “as if someone had let fresh air into the room.” He further describes the challenges faced by the teacher who is competing against an entire machinery — hardware and software — that is “designed to distract” because “attention is the substance that makes the whole consumer Internet go”.
Losing concentration

The distraction-by-device factor may be somewhat possible to control inside a classroom, where the teacher’s orders rule, but what about other places — in our hostel rooms, at our study tables and in discussion groups at the canteen? How do we draw ourselves away from those flickering screens, the beeping mobiles, the pings on our tablets and the status updates on open Facebook and Instagram feeds? Most of us keep our browsers open while we are working on documents or reading a soft copy of a document. We open the laptop in complete earnestness, planning to finish an assignment, and before we know it, we’ve allowed our fingers to click here and there, scrolling down a dozen screens in pursuit of a momentary interest and a whole hour has just vanished! (Confession: I found myself going off to check various open windows no less than five times between the start and end of this paragraph!)
It takes a lot of discipline to put our devices away when we are by ourselves — or even when we are with others. And then, it takes even more discipline to stay on one screen when we’re immersed in our computers. It may begin with a valid reason — that you need to check something periodically for your assignment. But then it turns into a search without purpose, where you flit from site to site for no reason other than idle curiosity.
The lurking danger

The most dangerous aspect of all this is that we do not even realise we are being distracted. When there is noise or physical discomfort, we find ways to deal with it so that we can continue our work. But when the distraction comes from inside our heads, it’s much, much harder to control. It takes us a while to even recognise it as distraction, as taking us away from something. Sometimes, it seems as if being distracted has become the normal state. It’s common to find people checking their messages or answering their phones right in the middle of a conversation. When we are working on our computers too, we routinely “multitask” across several open windows.
By focusing on several different things at the same time, we fail to give our full attention — and, therefore, our best — to the main task at hand. While multitasking may be useful and even necessary at times, it is not something that is desirable when we are doing a task that requires concentration. Reading class notes, listening to a lecture, writing a paper, taking part in discussions that lead us to understand challenging concepts — these are activities that demand our full attention and intellectual engagement.
Finding focus

Distraction is hard enough to fight even without our electronic devices. All of us know how difficult it is to keep our minds on something that we are not very interested in, or that we are forced to do (like listening to lectures!). But maybe this natural inclination to let our minds wander is being fuelled by the presence of these digital devices that pull our attention away from the here and now? This is a distraction we can work to fight, if we become conscious of it. Once we are aware of it, we need to ask ourselves some simple questions: What is it that we need to be focusing on right now? Why do we need to check our messages every few minutes? What will we really gain by staying online during the time we are working on something?
The answers to these questions are (usually) surprisingly simple.
I’d suggest that even if you have a teacher who does not ban laptops, tablets and phones from class, you do it yourself. And when you’re alone, working on that assignment that refuses to get done, try finishing your reading, gathering your notes together, and then consciously shutting down all windows but one — the one you actually need to be working on!

View image on Twitter

text of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s address on the historic successful insertion of Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) into Martian orbit

India has successfully reached Mars.

History has been created today. We have dared to reach out into the unknown. And have achieved the near impossible. I congratulate all ISRO scientists, as well as all my fellow Indians, on this historic occasion.

Travelling a mind-boggling distance of more than 650 million, or 65 crore kilometres.

we have gone beyond the boundaries of human enterprise and imagination. We have, accurately navigated our spacecraft, through a route known to very few.

And, we have done so, from a distance so large; that it took even a command signal from Earth, more time to reach it, than it takes sunlight to reach us.

The odds were stacked against us. Of the 51 missions attempted across the world so far, a mere 21 had succeeded.

But we have prevailed!

With today’s spectacular success, ISRO joins an elite group of only three other agencies worldwide, to have successfully reached the red planet.

India, in fact, is the only country to have succeeded in its very first attempt. We put together the spacecraft in record time, within a mere 3 years of first studying its feasibility.

Built it indigenously, in a pan-Indian effort stretching from Bangalore to Bhubhaneshwar, and Faridabad to Rajkot.

Used a smaller rocket and payload to reduce the cost, even while increasing the complexity of an already challenging mission.

And launched it on our very own PSLV launch vehicle. These are all accomplishments that will go down as landmarks in history. Uncertainty is a part of the journey of every explorer who seeks to push boundaries.

The hunger of exploration and the thrill of discovery are not for the faint-hearted.

Innovation, after all, by its very nature involves risk; as you are trying to do something which has not been done before. It`s a leap into the dark. Humanity would not have progressed, if we had not taken such leaps into the unknown. And space is indeed the biggest unknown out there.

No one represents this zeal for exploring the unknown more, than our space scientists here at ISRO.

Through your brilliance and hard work, you have made it a habit of achieving the impossible.

You have developed self-reliance across critical domains, often in the face of hostile circumstances.

Every generation of your scientists, has groomed the next home-grown lot

Through your achievements, you have honoured our fore-fathers, and inspired our future generations! You truly deserve all the love and respect you get from a grateful nation!

We Indians are a proud people!

Despite our many limitations, we aspire for the best.

The success of our space program is a shining example of what we are capable of as a nation.

Our space program has been an example of achievement, which inspires the rest of us to strive for excellence ourselves.

Moreover, space exploration requires cutting-edge expertise across diverse disciplines. A successful space program thus generates applications across multiple domains.

Our efforts in particular, have historically focussed on the ultimate objective of nation-building. Of translating space technology into space applications.

Delivering the fruits of this farthest frontier to the remotest corners of the country. Deepening our governance, strengthening our economy, and improving our lives.

We also have a great legacy and responsibility to live up to. Our ancestors had helped the world understand the mysteries of the heavens.

Grasp the idea of Shunya or nothingness.

Map spatial knowledge; such as the rotation of the Earth, motion of planets and occurrence of eclipses.

Modern India must continue playing this leading role of ‘Jagad-guru Bharat’.

My dear friends!

Let me conclude by saying that in contrast with the linear nature of Western philosophy; there is no absolute ‘beginning’ or ‘end’ in our Eastern understanding of the cosmos.

There is only a continuous, unending cycle of dispassionate, detached perseverance.

Atal ji’s vision had inspired us to reach for the moon.

The successful Chandrayan mission, in turn led to the Mars Orbiter Mission.

This too, must become but a base for challenging the next frontier - of an inter-planetary mission.

Let today’s success, only drive us with even greater vigour and conviction. Let’s set ourselves even more challenging goals. And strive even harder to achieve them.

Let us push our boundaries. And then, push some more!

“Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action ... Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”
