With allotment of 13 acres at Gambheeram on the city outskirts, the Central Government will be grounding India’s first Centre for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) at an investment of Rs.80 crore.
The project of this kind, which is available only in few advanced countries like the US and the UK, will be useful for E3 tests and electromagnetic interference (EMI) of various electronic instruments and systems of daily and specialised use, including underwater warfare weapons.
The facility is set up by the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), which is under the Department of Electronics & IT (DeitY), Ministry of Communications & IT.
SAMEER has centres at Mumbai for microwave research, Chennai for electromagnetic research and Kolkata for millimetre wave research.
Programme Director of Centre for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects B. Subba Rao told The Hindu on Wednesday that the facility coming up in the city would be one-stop solution for all electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) needs. It would be made operational in one to one and a half years and fully operational in three years from taking possession of the land.
He said SAMEER had been in the forefront of R&D activities in the area of electromagnetic interference and compatibility studies. It had state-of-the-art infrastructure and a large pool of seasoned scientists in the field of EMI/EMC.
“E3 in Vizag will meet the growing demand from manufacturers/industries, Defence services for EMI/EMC R&D, test, measurement and consultancy services. It will be fully equipped with state-of-the-art test facilities/instrumentation to meet the needs as per international EMC standards,” he stated.
The primary objectives of the Vizag facility will be E3 R&D, EMC compliance testing, scientific publication, evolving standards and test specifications, E3 prediction, analysis, design consultancy and hardening services, training and education and EM modelling and analysis. The Centre has recently opened its temporary office on the premises of Symbiosys Technologies, Rushikonda.
